Djokovic set a new record for grand slam matches played in the Open Era when he took to the court at Rod Laver Arena to face Jaime Faria on Wednesday.

"When Pakistan is not playing cricket or hockey, I always support India. It's a much better side and one of the best Indian teams I have seen. They have improved a lot and they are giving hard times to the Europeans.

With the victory, they remained on course to win their second consecutive Olympic medal. However, the key defender’s suspension has sparked quite a bit of controversy.

That took Djokovic clear of Roger Federer, who he matched earlier in the week when he played in the first round, for the most grand slam matches in the Open Era.

Serena Williams (423) ranks third on the all-time list, ahead of Rafael Nadal (358) and her sister, Venus (356).

Djokovic already holds the record for grand slam match wins, with a remarkable 378 under his belt, nine clear of next-best Federer (369). His 88.11% win ratio is the third best of any male player to have recorded at least 100 singles victories at the majors, after Bjorn Borg (89.24%) and Bill Tilden (89.76%).

He is hunting a record-breaking 25th grand slam title, and a record-extending 11th Australian Open crown.

The 37-year-old would also bring up his 100th ATP Tour-level trophy should he win the tile in Melbournewinzir, becoming just the third player to achieve the feat, after Jimmy Connors (109) and Federer (103).
